Americans With Disabilities Act
On July 26, 1990 President George H. W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act. The intent of Congress in passing the legislation was to “provide a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities.” The Act was amended in 2008 with additional protections.

PRESIDENT BUSH SIGNING ADA
In the intervening years, there has been considerable progress from curb cuts, to public accommodations, ensuring employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, and access to polling places. Design standards have changed, and older buildings have been retrofitted to reduce or eliminate barriers. But perhaps more than anything the Americans with Disabilities Act has helped raise public sensitivities to the challenges - travel, employment, public accommodations, and more - experienced by persons with disabiities.
